The Natural Gardener

Organic Carrots

The idea of eating home grown vegetables from your own back yard veggie patch is the goal of many a natural gardener.  It appeals to us in so many different ways. We gain a sense of achievement and accomplishment in having produced something, and to then go on and eat it is a delicious bonus.  We also get to control one part of our food supply and can know exactly what we are eating, where it came from and how it was grown. We can be sure it is chemical free.  We can even save some money in the process which is always a bonus!

Starting out an Organic veggie patch is surely an exciting time, especially if you have children, they can watch and learn as the veggies grow with their help and nurturing.

If you are starting out on your veggie patch or are even just considering starting one then make sure you get the right information to start with.  The location you choose might mean the difference between success and failure.  So best to begin with the very best advantage you can.  The Bionomic Gardener has some useful resources for the budding veggie gardener ( pun intended! ).

To Filter or Not to Filter?

Chances are that you are one of the lucky people on the planet that have potable drinking water fed by tap into your home.  There are many, many people that don’t have this “luxury”.  The question is do you drink it?

Tap Water or Filtered Water? If you choose not to drink your tap water why is that? Maybe you have a very valid reason, lead pipes in your house perhaps.  Bottled water is also a choice that some people make, not one that we would choose. The expense and resources wasted on transporting water from one side of the planet to the other is outrageous. Australians drinking Norwegian water and Americans drinking French water! Lots of people choose to filter their tap water to give them more peace of mind about what they are drinking.

There is one problem. Remembering to change those filter cartridges.  Delaying the change or maybe even forgetting will soon find the cartridge overloaded with the contaminants it has captured. Then it will cease to work as a filter and it may start to leach the contaminants into the store of water, be it a jug or water cooler.  It might taste the same for a while but be assured it wont be the same.

Most filter cartridges last only six months. Use the change between Daylight Savings to remind you to change your filter and keep your drinking water safe.  Don’t let your good intentions cause you more harm than help.

Stress Tension and Headache

Have you had a headache?

A headache is perhaps the most common sign that our modern lifestyle is taking it’s toll on your health and wellbeing. As is the number of headaches we suffer from as a general populous.  Is is reported that at the very least 90% of adults have had or will have a tension headache, if you haven’t had a headache you are certainly in the minority.   The market for over the counter painkillers or pain relief remedies is absolutely huge, for example recent statistics suggested that over 50% of the British population use paracetamol or a derivative product to control headaches or back pain on a regular basis. That’s over 30 million people taking a highly toxic drug which is the world biggest cause of poisoning without a second thought.

Headache Painkillers

The next time you are in the supermarket or drugstore take a moment to look at the range of painkillers available.  There are now pills for headaches, cold & flu, back ache, period pain, migraine and who knows what else.  Are all these really different? Take a look at the back of the packaging for these “different” products and you might be surprised what you read.

Perhaps instead of taking pain relief products to help mask the painful symptoms of a tension headache wouldn’t it be preferable to prevent headaches occurring in the first place?

There are four easy steps to help prevent tension headaches from occurring so frequently.

  • drink water on a regular basis – actual water, not tea, coffee or herbal teas.
  • take a break and allow your eyes to rest and focus on something further away
  • be aware of your posture, especially your shoulders and neck. Don’t be a slouch!
  • get your eyes tested – even if you think don’t need glasses.

Of course there are other types of headache that can be more painful and more severe, migraine headaches for example.  Migraines can be very debilitating to the sufferer and can last days at a time, the  definitive cause of migraine headaches is not fully known but sufferers report that certain stimulus can trigger a migraine attack.  Caffeine, Chocolate and Red Wine being the major factors.

The chances of a headache being caused by something more serious are very low but still a possibility.  If your headaches are very painful or occur very frequently you should visit your medical practitioner.
