In a time where obesity is on the rise and the highest it has been in decades, there is now more than ever so much emphasis on ones health and how one can stay active and healthy in the most convenient ways. Poor nutrition and lack of exercise slowly shows its consequences through fatigue and even illness which can result in loss of work and in worst case scenarios, unemployment. So where does this leave us and the generation after us living in a world of technology, where everything from Computer Games, working on Laptops and Ipads, are usually ‘sitting down’ activities? The benefits of a standing desk may well be the solution we are all looking for.
You may not have heard of the Standing Desk previously, but I can assure you, you have indeed encountered the Standing Desk, in either the workplace, home, or while you are out and about. Let’s look at the benefits of having a standing desk from a couple of different perspectives : a health perspective, and a design perspective.
The Health Benefits of a Standing Desk
In today’s rapidly changing, fast paced economy, it is not unusual for the average blue collar (or even white collar) worker to be spending on average 12-14 hours at their desk seated. Being seated at a desk all day can restrict blood flow to important parts of the body, can cause cramps in muscle areas and be a cause of bad posture which in itself may result in long term damage to back muscles and even the spine. The benefits of a Standing Desk from a health perspective, include:
- Reduced risk in developing Varicose veins
- A study conducted in 2013 indicates that the heart rate is likely is beat 10 beats higher (source: Wikipedia)
- In similar studies, women who stood for more than five hours a day, had babies with lower birthweight than those who stood for two hours or less.
Some studies have also show that productivity increased by up to 10% when people use a standing desk.
The Design Benefits of a Standing Desk
In addition to the benefits of a standing desk not only being favourable to your health, it is also aesthetically pleasing. History shows that in the 18th and 19th centuries, standing desks were not only common, but popular in both homes and in work places. It is not uncommon these days to walk into an Technology Shop such as Apple to be greeted by staff at Standing Desks, as this type of layout is not only space saving with the absence of chairs, but also trendy. Another not so obvious benefit of a standing desk in the workplace is the quick turn over of customers, who don’t have a cozy chair to sit and chat.
These are just a few of the benefits of a standing desk, there are a variety of models available in reputable department stores depending on your need. They come in different styles and variations, diferent heights and different models, such as a sit-stand desk which can adjust between both sitting and standing. The choices are endless for any person opting for a standing desk.
